SHANE Watson was forced from the MCG and failed to finish his seventh over of the day at the MCG, prompting fears he may have broken down, before Aussie fans breathed a collective sigh of relief as the all-rounder returned to the field later in the day.

As England stalled at 3-110, Watson walked from the ground after he appeared to injury himself while running in to bowl the fifth ball of his seventh over.

Cricket Australia later confirmed Watson had pain in his right groin, and was assessed by medical staff before deciding he was able to return to the field.

Watson, who had 1-11 off his 6.4 overs, has a history of calf injuries.

He had earlier snared the wicket of Michael Carberry with a super in-swinger, which hit the top of off stump, after the opener left the ball in the 34th over, just seven overs following lunch.
