Iain Stewart: I feared being gay would stop me being MP

A Conservative MP has told how he feared he would not be able to pursue a career in politics, because he was gay.

Iain Stewart, MP for Milton Keynes South, told the House of Commons he feared being “cast aside and prevented from doing it, exposed, whatever, because of who I was”.

The MP was speaking during a debate about repealing defunct laws which suggested it was possible to dismiss a seafarer for being gay.

He warned that the law could create a fear in young people that they could not pursue a vocation they wanted, because they were different.
