THIS bittersweet story will melt your heart.
A British woman has married her terminally-ill boyfriend in his hospital bed, just a few weeks after he was diagnosed with bowel cancer.
Cola Weller, 22, said “I do” to Felix Glenny, 23, after doctors told the couple Felix’s cancer was terminal and he only had a few weeks to live.
Felix was admitted to hospital on November 11 after suffering severe stomach cramps. It took doctors weeks to diagnose the problem – they initially thought it was irritable bowels, a sickness bug or kidney infection.
Doctors removed the large tumour in Felix’s bowel, but further tests showed the cancer had already spread throughout his entire body and he had only weeks to live.
Cola and Felix were surrounded by family and friends during the ceremony in his hospital room.
Their two young children – Ralph, two, and Pearl, four months – joined the emotional celebrations at Medway Maritime Hospital in Kent.
“We had talked about getting married even before he was ill – and when we found out the cancer was terminal we wanted to do it straight away,” Cola told
The Daily Mail
“It was crazy because we were really happy, but it was so emotional.
“It was a lovely day and we’ve been thinking about it today, saying ‘It was perfect and it couldn’t have gone any better’.”
The couple met through mutual friends in August 2010. They instantly fell in love and within a year had moved in together and were pregnant with their first child, Ralph.
But just weeks after his second child was born, Felix was struck with awful stomach pains and couldn’t make it to work.
“A surgeon had a feel of his tummy and could feel something in his bowels, and that’s when they did the CT scan and found it was cancer,” said Cola.
“It was awful finding out – we’ve got two small children. He’s been in hospital since. In the four weeks since he had his tumour removed the cancer spread quite far.”
But despite the terrible tragedy of his illness, Felix’s thoughts remain with his young family.
“He’s quite a family man, he insists he brings the money in,” said Cola. “So he went to work two or three times while he was ill, but couldn’t really do much, because he had major stomach cramps which would go and come back.”
Cola has described her husband as an “exceptionally brave” man.
“Felix is really comfortable at the moment. He’s got his head round everything and just wants to spend time with the kids, me and his family.
“He’s been really, really positive, and is trying to think of the kids.
“He doesn’t want to get upset in front of the kids, he doesn’t want to let them know what’s going on.”
The couple have been overwhelmed by the support shown to them by total strangers. Felix’s best mate Ashley set up an online fundraising page where people can make donations to the family. So far the page has raised almost 14,000 pounds ($25,500).
“It’s lovely – I’ve had so many people message me saying they’re thinking of me and I don’t even know them,” said Cola.
Both strangers and friends have flooded the page with messages of support.
“Felix, I am so sorry to hear of what you are all going through. You sound the most amazing husband and father. I wish you comfort and that all of you can feel the love of those praying for you. God bless,” wrote one person.
“What a beautiful family, my heart goes out to you x,” wrote another.
The Glenny’s plan to spend Christmas Day together in hospital, with Felix by their side.
